CoE-MaSS

Publications

The DSTI-NRF CoE-MaSS funds numerous research grants, training opportunities, as well as Postgraduate Bursaries and Postdoctoral Fellowships in MaSS fields. It is important to note that our researchers, fellows and students do not give any of their institutional DHET research subsidy to the Centre. The research incentive subsidy stays with the institution/faculty/school/department where the research was carried out, in line with that Node’s policies and procedures for DHET research incentive funding.

Academic publications

The Centre reports to our funder (the national Department of Science and Innovation, with funds administered through the National Research Foundation) on a series of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) annually. One of these is Research. The publications that follow below are mostly peer-reviewed ISI-accredited journal publications, however, some are pre-print publications in arXiv or are either chapters or books. Where publications are not a journal publication, they are indicated as such.

Technical Reports

Some of the Focus Areas within the Centre publish Technical Reports to assist various national and international industry sectors with problems that plague their sectors from a mathematical standpoint. This work is exceptionally important in that it benefits industry, and thus society, as a whole. The technical contributions have assisted the following industry sectors in making improvements including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Mining (preventing truck falls in open cast mines; economic value modelling; rock fracture development modelling; rock strength and blast fragmentation; performance of composite liners)
  • Energy (exploding lakes; methane gas extraction; spontaneous combustion of stock-piled coal; utility pricing)
  • Wildlife and environmental management (fishing exclusion zones; rhino poaching; birds of prey near wind farms; electronic animal tracking; photograph matching for plant conservation)
  • Health (optimising best distribution routes for blood product to blood banks; refuse disposal sites effecting health)
  • Agriculture (pollination phenology; sugar cane production optimisation; bagasse stockpiling and spontaneous combustion; hard boiling)
  • Climate change (reducing urban heat islands with green roofs; carbon capture)
  • Socio-economic development (counting houses using LiDAR; economic cost of hazardous landfill sites)
  • Transport (traffic light synchronisation; air traffic rerouting; minibus taxis using RBT routes)
  • Shipping (chessboard wave dangers; rogue waves)
  • Sport (lane choices in swimming; decision making in football)
  • Entertainment (optimising movie scheduling)
  • Manufacturing (automating tempered glass quality control)

Researcher Videos

This page contains video outputs generated from the CoE-MaSS 2019, 2022, and 2023 Annual Research Meetings held at Future Africa UP, and North-West University, in conjunction with Jive Media Africa. The aim is to give researchers online exposure, and stimulate public awareness of the day-to-day relevance of their scientific research.

The Art of Research 2025

This page contains a series of research posters generated from the CoE-MaSS Annual Research Meetings in September 2018 and 2025, and the Popular Writing Workshop in 2021, in conjunction with Jive Media Africa. Science Spaza Newsletters

The CoE-MaSS has produced Science Spaza newsletters that are made available to approximately 180 self-started rural science clubs that are in existence around South Africa. These types of community engagement activities with schools are extremely important in alerting school learners from rural schools to the possibilities of careers in scientific fields, and this is done through the focus on science careers in these newsletters.

Podcasts

In January 2020, the Centre sponsored the production of a podcast series for the Mathematics in Industry Study Group. These podcasts, produced by JiveMedia Africa, highlight four of the industry-related problems posed to the group, and the panels – consisting of students, academics, and industry experts – discuss the issues and challenges related to each problem, and how they aim to solve the issues using mathemtaical modelling. The links to these podcasts can be found below.

10th Anniversary Legacy Video Series

To mark our ten-year anniversary in 2024, the Centre and affiliate media partners undertook to produce a series of nine videos to showcase various aspects of the Centre and its researchers over the last ten years. The aim of this series is not only to speak to our current stakeholders, but also to reach out to new collaborators, researchers, and affiliates.
